Prolific writer, Susanne Gervay and Danny the Dragon

The Danny the Dragon series has built up quite a fan base, and I regularly receive messages to praise the work.

Susanne Gervay, an award-winning short story writer, recently commented with these kind words, “Tina’s work is a delight!” Thank you Susanne!

Danny the Dragon to bring joy to kids in Victoria, Australia

Much devastation was caused by the Victoria, Australia wildfires of February 2009, including the loss of the children’s book collections at the local libraries and schools.

Through the hard work of authors, writers, concerned citizens and the coordinated efforts of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI), the book collections have been re-built as a result of generous book donations from around the world.

I am very pleased to have been able to donate a copy of Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy to the collection, plus it’s great to know that the local Victoria, Australia children will have the opportunity to get to know Danny and his traveling companion Skipper.

I do hope that the book brings joy and sparks the imaginations of the children, in the same way that it has done here in the States!

Tina Turbin – featured on the “Garden of the Soul” radio show segment entitled, “Creating a Bright Future Through Children’s Literature”

Lynn Serafinn, host of the “Garden of the Soul” radio show, had the pleasure of interviewing two children’s authors, Tina Turbin being one of them, on Wednesday August 5th. A highly insightful show, the discussion included the focus of Tina’s “Danny the Dragon” book series: mainly to inspire simple values of kindness, friendliness as well as healthy eating and dietary awareness in children; and many other important topics were explored, such as the ways in which authors, parents and teachers can use literature to spark positive change in our children, despite a media-saturated society.

Writing game image

Play the Writing Game!
By Carlynn McCormick

I know quite a number of budding authors who sweep me away with their creative ideas and imaginings-individuals filled with passion about the books they are writing. I am often surprised, however, to learn nothing or very little is actually put down on paper. Years pass, stories dim and manuscripts never materialize.

These individuals taught me the most important rule of the writing game: to be a writer, you must write. Of course one may dream or ponder, but such actions are preparation. Dreaming is not writing. Pondering is not writing. Putting thoughts down on paper is writing. The only way to be a writer is to write. There is no other way.

Rules of the Game

Why write? A foremost reason is that putting your ideas on paper makes them more concrete and keeps them from fading. Why do I write? It is a way to express things that are important to me and it is a way of forcing me to observe something closely so I can write about it. But my favorite reason: I find writing fun. It’s the best way I know to propel the innermost thoughts out of my mind and onto the playing field of life.

If you don’t write much, I invite you to write more. If you are new to the adventure, you might naturally ask, “What should I write about?” That is easy to answer. Everybody has loves or hates-things they feel deeply about-write about the things youknow or feel. You are, after all, unique unto yourself: only you can write precisely the way you see things.

Another rule of the game is to read a lot. One is usually “in love” with reading before he is bitten by the “writing bug.” Stephen King, author of such best sellers as Fire Starter and The Green Mile, says: “If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time or the tools to write.”

Being an avid reader usually makes it easier to be a prolific writer. Try it. Read a good book. Get inspired. Grab pen and paper or keyboard and let your own story rip!

Most Important Rule

The next writing rule is so noteworthy it should be embossed on every author’s forehead: never, NEVER stomp on your own creativity. Statements such as “I’m not a good writer” or “my writing stinks” are poison. So for goodness sake, don’t poison yourself! And don’t let someone else poison you. If you ask for another’s opinion and you don’t like what he says, ignore it. And don’t take advice you don’t agree with (not mine or anyone’s). Above all, ignore critics. It’s not a perfect world. Someone, somewhere, at sometime is going to be critical of you. Utterly and completely ignore his snarl.

One last rule: know the difference between writing and editing. To edit is to prepare for publication or presentation by correcting, revising, or adapting. Editing is not writing. When you write, you are letting creative juices flow. Don’t let your attention get stuck on grammar, punctuation, spelling or re-reading to see if it makes sense. It doesn’t matter. It is about writing creatively. It is about having fun. Later, if your work is for an audience, you must edit, but remember you are editing. It is a separate skill.

With the rules of the writing game delineated, anyone can play!

Tina Turbin Speaks Out – How to Get Organized

Let’s pick up where I left off about my schedule and how I get so much done. To be organized is a good thing and to have a schedule of some sort is always helpful. Sometimes SO MUCH is happening and I have so many deadlines that I think I am going around in little circles. Piles of papers, files, the computers and computer screens. I research and write about companies regarding kids and their health, gluten-free and family issues as this all also aligns with my personal goals to help improve the quality of life and health of others. I write for other publications and sites and it can get a bit overwhelming to keep up with all that is required and to also keep on top of the Danny the Dragon series, tours and my humanitarian interests. This is my what I do: keep a large calendar and I mean LARGE. Write out the appts. and deadlines. Or if you are an aspiring author, set goals. I have found that e-mails are the black hole. I use discipline and do not allow myself to get into them unless I have done what is really important. I also do not at all bother with answering all my e mails as I only reply to those that are important. Some can wait until the week-end or even the next month if you are truly too busy. I do not use my phone or computer for my MAIN calendar. It just does not work for me. To have one BIG calendar up for me to see at all times keeps me focused and organized. Good help is another factor as we all know.

Author – Tina Turbin’s Schedule

Many people ask me how I get so much done, what my schedule is like and do I ever sleep. First of all, yes I do get sleep. As a children’s author, writer and researcher I am very creative and the urge I feel to create is truly unlimited, has no bounds at all.

If I am tired it can slow me down a bit but not totally, to be honest. I am constantly creating new things for the moment and the future in my writing and things all around me continuously inspire me towards new ideas. I am also surrounded by lovely and positive people and anyone not into what I am doing; well sorry but “good-bye”. I just do not have time for anyone to slow me down and will not. So in a nutshell, this is how I get so much done. About my schedule, well I will fill you in next time. My husband, beautiful daughter and 2 creative boys (www.canontheband.com) are also an inspiration and support me beyond belief. We are a team and a strong wonderful family.
